December 2011 Blog Posts

It seems so appropriate to wrap-up 2011 on Thanskgiving Day because there is so much to be thankful for in my life.  In just December alone, there were a few of my favorite family outings, my baby Gavin turned two, and we celebrated a wonderful Christmas with my family in Dallas.

Yo Gabba Gabba concert -- one of my favorite shows ever!

Claire and I before Christmas Mass

Claire's Baby Dolls -- v1 and v2

What a month; I'm pooped!

I definitely invite you to check out the kids' individual blog posts to see the details of our exciting month.  You can also check out our December album, and don't forget to come back to see what 2012 had in store!

November 2011 Blog Posts

Finally done!  The quickly approaching one-year anniversary from the last posting (10/31/11) was just enough pressure for me to knock out November so that I could buy myself another month before having to post again.  :)  You'll notice that I've gone to very little monologue and just managed to post a handful of pics for the highlights.  Hey, I've got two kids ... I'm not going to bother apologizing (except to maybe my kids ...)

Looking back at last November, some favorite memories make me smile like the Howgates, the Pees, and the Laws coming to Dallas for separate visits, celebrating Zong's birthday, sharing The Muppets with Claire, the DreamWorks visit to the Gaylord, and finally making it down to the Boiling Crab with James after our misfortune during our anniversary week (Date 8).  Lucky for us, Claire has worked past her fear of characters or else I don't know what we would do when we head to Disney next year!

Can't do this for 2.5 hours with kids ...
and enjoy it at the same time, anyways

Enjoy the postings or check out our November album with all the pics included (no narrative).

Now that I've run out of memory on my laptop and about to move everything over to a new external storage device, I'm hoping to also finish up December here in the next couple of weeks.  Don't hold your breath, though!

October 2011

October is traditionally a super-busy month that takes full advantage of the cooling weather, the various festivals, and the cutness that is kids in costume.  I think I say this every month, but each month Claire and Gavin play with each other more and more, and it warms my heart to see how much they love each other, regardless how much they fight.  As I scroll through all of the pictures, I am reminded that even though these first couple of years have been tough, I've been able to give my kids forever friends.

October Photo Album - note that it's on Shutterfly; apparently Shutterfly bought KodakGallery (which I've been with since 2002!) which is a little bit scary for me -- it's a surprise I'm even in IT with how reluctant I am to change technologies -- but I figure I might as well get a jump on it starting now!

No More Diapers?

Well, I guess it's happened ... Gavin is in big boy underwear. I have to admit, I'm a bit shocked -- mostly because I have to admit that I had pretty much nothing to do with it. I mean, sure, some signs were there -- he's been waking dry in the morning for awhile now, it's impossible to keep him dressed, we've put him on the potty some at home, mostly to satisfy his curiosity, and he's been really good at telling me if he needs to potty when taking a bath for a few months now -- but it didn't really go beyond that. I'll be honest, it's not been anything that I've pushed because I'm not a huge fan of those first few weeks after you're diaper-free and constantly on high alert asking them every 10 minutes if they need to go potty and always sure you're about to change some wet (or poopie) underwear.

So, despite my reluctance, how did it happen? Gavin's class at school encourages use of the potty, so he's definitely been trying it some the three days he attends; last Thursday, his teacher even said that they'll start doing the every 30-min routine since he was showing signs of readiness. Well, he decided to show us all by deciding after bathtime the exact same evening that he just didn't want to put on his diaper. After some tug-of-war (with him winning by stripping off the diaper and running away), I decided to just let him sleep in his PJ pants and wet the bed ("serves his right" was going through my head). To my surprise, he woke up dry, used the potty in the morning, and stayed diaper-free until we were getting ready to leave the house for the day, and I found poop in his shorts ... and the diaper went back on. Blech. 14 hours sans diaper, though. Pretty impressive!

That night, same routine of not wanting a diaper, me saying "fine!", and him waking dry. Go Gavin! Four nights later, I finally admitted that maybe this whole diaper-free thing was going to stick and took him to the store to get some big boy underwear (which, after Claire, I struggle not to call "panties"). The next day, he returned to school, and I went ahead and sent him in his undies with extra changes of clothing and let his teachers deal with it. End of the day? Dry!

Just like that, my baby is out of diapers. We'll still wait and see if it sticks, but either way, my baby is definitely growing up. *sniff!*

Life is Short

It's a tragedy that it takes a tragedy to remind you how short life is.  Today, a friend from college passed away, leaving behind her a sea of friends that will miss her sweet personality and beautiful smile.

It also shocks me what a small world it has become with social media.  Within hours of the event, word had spread to dozens of people, all mourning the loss of such a wonderful spirit.

I hope everyone takes an extra moment to hug someone they love, reach out to someone that they haven't talked to lately, and count their blessing that surround them.

Rest in peace, sweet Sarah.

September 2011 Posted

September had a bunch of highlights for us as a family including our long-overdue Epsilon family vacation in Austin plus my own Girls Weekend in Vegas. Yes, it was Debbie and Syndee for both weekends, but it was just happy coincidence that I got to see them twice in one month. How spoiled I felt!

The reason we chose Vegas was Garth Brooks, and the show was absolutely amazing -- just Garth and a guitar. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Vegas has great hotels, awesome food, and relaxing spas. The best part was seeing my girlfriends for some much-appreciated girlie time.

August 2011 Recap

August was largely taken up by our 10-year anniversary and what we dubbed "10 Dates in 10 Days". The other 21 days of August? Well, we were proud to watch Claire advance to her yellow belt in Kenpo Karate, had a fantastic time when the Capps came to visit, and got to meet Baby Roux as just a few highlights. Take a look at the kiddos' blogs to see all the details and pictures!

10 Dates in 10 Days

Or, just as accurately known as "10 Pounds in 10 Days". :D James and I were blessed to celebrate our 10-year anniversary back in August 2011. We had originally planned to return to Hawaii where we get married, but when we started considering the logistics of having 1 and 3 year olds (do you take them on an 8-10 hour flight? do you leave them at home torturing grandparents for over a week?), we decided to modify our plans this time around. Besides, there will be plenty of future anniversaries to go back to the islands.

So, we concocted the plan to do "10 Dates in 10 Days" to celebrate our 10 years of married bliss. James and I each took turns choosing the agenda for the day, and we worked it out with grandparents and their school so that we would have a good portion of each day free to spend with one another.

Date 1: Peli-Peli
After dropping the kids off at James' parents house, we headed to James's first pick: Peli-Peli, a yummy African-inspired restaurant that was voted the most romantic restaurant in Houston in 2011.

Date 2: Star Wars and Mockingbird Bistro
I selected to visit the museum in Downtown Houston that was showing a Star Wars exhibit before doing an early dinner at Mockingbird Bistro where James had an AMAZING kobe burger that we still talk about to this day.

Date 3: Villa Capri
Ah, Villa Capri -- the location of our controversial first date. James "tricked" me into a lunch date on my very last day of my internship at Lockheed Martin, and this is where we ended up for some yummy seafood pasta that the owner recommended. This time, I went quite willingly to James' pick of date locales.

Date 4: Captain Kidd
I thought it would be fun to head out on the water, so my next date was to ride a pirate boat on the waters of Kemah. We picked up some subs from Neptunes beforehand and brought aboard my coveted bottle of Carnival wine that I had been saving for just such an occasion.

Date 5: A Bye ...
Back in Dallas, we had planned to go out for dinner and drop the kids off at Kiddin' Around ... only to discover/remember that Kiddin' Around isn't open on Sundays. Whoops. Instead, we took the kids to Willow Bend mall to play and got burgers at Fuddruckers.

Date 6: Hawaiian Food
With the kids in school, I thought it would be bonding to do a project together. I've been wanting to hang some frames on the wall in our living room for months now, and I figured a week off would be the time to do it. It took us a little bit more than just the one week, but it looks fantastic. In our Hawaiian clothes, we went to lunch was at the Kona Grill where we had Hawaiin-inspired food and spent a good amount of time trying to remember what we did the previous 9 years for our anniversaries. Dinner including the kids at L&L -- a Hawaiin fast-food joint. We also went and bought our blender (you may laugh, but those of you with kids, when was the last time you appliance shopping together?), exchanged gifts, and watched our wedding slideshow that I had burned from VCR to DVD (and it only took 10 years to get around to doing that!).

Date 7: Movie Date
After working on the pictures some more that morning, James chose this to be our "annual" movie day. We had some lunch at Chuy's, played some games at D&B, and watched "Crazy, Stupid, Love" which we both really enjoyed.

Date 8: Top Golf and Seafood
I had heard about Top Golf from some friends and really wanted to try it out. James and I had taken golf lessons together eons ago but never really pursued it since. We were both really happy with Top Golf, and James has been back a number of times since. We were also supposed to go to Boiling Crab afterwards but discovered that it was closed all week for remodeling, so we ended up at Big Shucks instead.

Date 9: Grapevine Wine
James' last date was a wine crawl through downtown Grapevine. We started with brunch at the Old West Cafe to put some food in our bellies before we saturated it with wine.

Date 10: Four Seasons
My last date was sort of a big one because I managed to stretch it out over the weekend. We started by going to In N Out in Frisco before heading to the Four Seasons in Las Colinas for massages and mani/pedis (in a manly way for James, of course). Then we picked up the kids from school to bring them back to the hotel where they had childcare for dinner while we dined alone at the Cafe on the Green to wrap up our "10 dates". The rest of the weekend was spent relaxing with the whole family at the hotel and enjoying being together.

So, that's it! 10 days of fun, 10 extra pounds to lose, and a lifetime of memories gained. If you'd like to see some of the pictures from our adventures, you can check them out in our "10 Dates in 10 Days" album.

Blogs through July

July marked my one-year anniversary when I went part-time, and I'm still grateful for the opportunity every day (well, maybe every other day). :D Of course I sometimes feel like I'm not doing anything all that well -- that I need to be a more engaged employee, better housekeeper, or more present mom -- but I also feel like I'm better at everything as well because I still get adult time, make enough money to pay for daycare, have hours at the house alone to get chores done, and still have more time with the kids than if I were working full time. I'm lucky to be in the organization I'm in, work for the boss that I have, and am surrounded by the talent that is around me ... and to have a husband that supports me, kids that love me, and friends and family that are there sharing the laughter and memories that abound.

Looking at the July pics, some memories stand out. One is when Claire was doing her dance camp and we dropped Gavin off at school first for a couple of the sessions. Even though Claire is constantly wanting more "just mommy and me" time, she was quite concerned that we were out and about having fun without her baby brother and let me know (multiple times) how much she missed him.

Another is when Dwo and Crystal came to visit after Zong moved up to Dallas. It's pretty cool to have a weekend of play "just because" with my little bros. I hate to brag, but -- like Claire -- I think my baby brothers are pretty darn cool, and we always have a blast together even when we're not doing much of anything. Come to think of it, what these two stand-out memories share is the bond of family and the love we share. I guess my parents taught us right, and I'm hope that I continue to do right by my kids as well.

Family love
